Baidu Inc, China's leading search engine provider, announced that its latest AI model, Ernie 3.5, has surpassed Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT in comprehensive ability scores and outperformed GPT-4 in several Chinese capabilities.

The test was conducted using AGIEval and C-Eval benchmarks. Baidu's new model offers better training and inference efficiency, allowing for faster and cheaper iterations. It also supports external plugins for more specific tasks, such as summarizing long text and generating precise answers. This development comes amid a global AI buzz and competition among Chinese tech companies.
