Harvard dropout made startup Etched challenges Nvidia

A new challenger has emerged in the world of AI hardware, and it's making waves with bold claims.

Made by two ambitious dropouts the revolutionary AI chip from California-based startup Etched, Sohu is outed as 20 times faster than Nvidia’s flagship H100 GPU, it is is specifically designed to supercharge transformer models like ChatGPT.

Etched claims that Sohu runs transformer models 20 times faster than Nvidia’s H100 and is 10 times faster than the more powerful B200 GPU, based on the company's emulation tests.

Sohu differs from traditional GPUs by focusing exclusively on transformer models, which may enable new AI products that require immense computational power.

Etched has already raised $120 million and secured “tens of millions” of dollars in preorder hardware, as well as a fabrication deal with TSMC.

While the potential is immense, the release date of Sohu remains unclear, and the practical impact of this cutting-edge technology is still in development.

The AI hardware market currently dominated by Nvidia, which recently hit a $3 trillion market cap due to the success of its AI-driven GPUs.

With Sohu coming up right after Nvidia delayed their blackwell chips this may be a golden opportunity for this high aspiring startup to claim some grounds in the AI chip business.
